Day 59

Thanks for the words of encouragement on Monday, all. With almost no effects being felt from that run, I’m gonna keep going until I can’t again.

5 minutes walking
1 minute jogging/1 minute walking x 7
5 minutes walking

Total time: 25 minutes (I wasn’t clock-watching on the last walk)
Total mileage: 1.3 miles

First time I’ve run in 33 degree weather since grade school. I bundled up well, and aside from the bottom half of my face (gonna have to look into one of those Mortal Kombat-lookin’ half masks, I think), I stayed very warm and comfortable. Actually had to take off my $5 St. Mark’s Place earmuffs on the home stretch. Lungs aren’t used to the cold yet, and my left knee did what it’s been doing (very little barking from the usual spot on my left calf, though, just some warming up in the calves from the exertion), but other than that, this was fine. The “I’m working out here” level of exertion kicked in about midway, but I wasn’t close to my wall, and I shouldn’t have been anyway. I’ve done this a few times before. I will say that shorter running times are harder for me to pace myself on than longer ones. I must be built for distance.

Onward to Friday.

    re: cold weather gear

    some sources of (good) face-warmy-shit
    cabela’s
    duluth trading co.

look for work wear companies, they have the best cold weather shit ever, and it’s for construction humps, so it’s quality and (usually) affordable.

Don’t freeze yer nuts off, you might need them. God I miss the cold.

I’ll give that stuff a look. I’m probably going to end up leaning more toward the athletic companies’ products than a general outdoorsy place like Cabela’s or a work wear place, just because I need something lightweight, but I also don’t want to spend $60 a pop for whatever a company like Under Armour is selling. They’re a little ridiculous.

Thanks for the pointers, and don’t worry, my nuts are fine. Y’see, just like I did in the 90+ degree weather (much to the alarm and confusion of my fellow runners), I’m still running in jeans. This might be tougher to do once I start the longer runs, but right now, it’s totally comfortable for me.

werd. though you’d be freaking surprised at how technical shit is for hunters (cabela’s). They have some CRAZY ASS SHIT in their big catalogue. I get it because the barbecue smoker company I worked for was represented retail-wise by cabelas.

And, well, I like catalogues. If nothing else, it’s entertaining to see how much shit they put camo on (baby clothes come to mind… and wtf do you need camo underpants for?!)

  4. Scott Crawford Says:

There are definitely times when I could’ve used effective camo underwear in my lifetime, mostly to sneak out of the bedrooms of undesirables.

That said, I’ll poke at Cabela’s, and hope that their stuff’s lightweight (my main concern there).
