“I’ll take you to Vegas, and abuse you for a while…”
Went to see Blue Scream at the Brighton Bar in beautiful Long Branch, NJ (OK, exaggerating a little there, but the Brighton’s a good little place). Been meaning to forever, as I haven’t seen them since they were called Stargazer back in the ’70s, with a few different members. Very solid show…they’re a good deal harder than they used to be, almost punkish in their sound nowadays, but it totally works. Tia can still absolutely wail on that microphone, Amber is easily one of the best bassists in the NYC metro area, and Tom’s one hell of a great lead guitarist. The new guys (sorry, know there’s been some personnel changes, we haven’t been introduced yet, and I wanna make sure I get your names right, heh…) fit right in there too, great stuff all around! Great to see them; really, it’s been too long. They’re playing Freddy’s Back Room in Brooklyn (BROOKLYN!!!!! Sorry. Z Brothers moment there.) on June 26th, and they’re definitely worth checking out.
Also caught Waterproof Blonde from Louisville, Kentucky, who apparently did ex-WWE wrestler Sean O’Haire’s theme music. I’m guessing that this won’t be the last the world hears from them by a long shot. Quality band, with sort of an Angelfish/Motels/Divinyls feel to them, very catchy, sleek pop/rock stuff. Singer Rachel Hagan is an absolute knockout, too, which of course helps. =) They’ve also got a few gigs coming up in the NYC area, including the Mercury Lounge in New York later tonight, and good ol’ Arlene’s this Tuesday, the 27th.
Come to think of it, if they read this and they’ve got time before or after the Merc Lounge gig (*hint hint*), they should go to Arlene’s for the Punk Rock/Heavy Metal Karaoke 5th anniversary show, which also runs tonight from 10 PM-1 AM! Even if they get there a little late, it’d still be cool to see them stop in and make an appearance. Hell, you should all stop in! I’m going to see if I can beat out 40 million people for that Darkness song, otherwise…oh hell, I’ll think of something.
More soon, including hopefully some long-overdue album (Khanate, Rue, and probably s’more) and show (Psychedelic Furs/The Alarm) reviews, and some news on the return of My Big, Black Cock Radio!
